Human Sciences LES – social economics (EQF 4)

The High School of Humanities majoring in economics and social sciences allows students to establish a direct connection between the subjects studied and the social, economic, and cultural context. Through the study of economics and law, linguistics and social sciences, science, and humanities, it offers up-to-date training that can be applied in a variety of fields.
It is the only non-linguistic high school where two foreign languages are taught. Furthermore, economics and social sciences are combined with mathematics, statistics, and humanities (psychology, sociology, anthropology, research methodology) to analyze economic and social phenomena.

Qualification Level and Credits

Both programmes offered by Mondo Scuola Malta are formally recognised by the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) and correspond to Level 4 of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and the Maltese Qualifications Framework (MQF).

Since these are secondary education programs and not higher education qualifications, the Italian system does not award ECTS credits. Student evaluation is based on hours of instruction, curricular content, and national learning objectives defined by the Ministry of Education and Merit.

According to the Maltese Qualifications Framework (MQF), both programmes correspond to MQF Level 4, equivalent to completion of post-secondary education in Malta. Obtaining this qualification allows access to higher education or employment.

Delivery Method

All programmes offered by Mondo Scuola Malta are delivered in person at our campus: Mediterranean College of Sport, 50 Triq Xorrox, Birkirkara, Malta.

Teaching takes place in physical classrooms, laboratories, and structured learning environments. Mondo Scuola Malta uses a Learning Management System (LMS) for administrative functions—including attendance tracking, class schedules, and access to supplementary learning materials—but this platform does not replace in-person teaching. All teaching activities, assessments, and interactions between teachers and students take place physically on campus. Students are required to attend scheduled classes according to the timetable provided at the beginning of each academic year. Attendance is monitored and recorded through the LMS and electronic records. Minimum attendance requirements are defined in the Student Handbook.

Frequency Mode

Both programmes offered by Mondo Scuola Malta are available exclusively on a full-time basis.

Students are enrolled as full-time students and are required to attend all scheduled classes for the entire academic year. The academic year follows the structure established by the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) and has been adapted to the Maltese context in accordance with the conditions of the MFHEA license. Students with documented special educational needs (BES) or specific learning disabilities (DSA) may benefit from personalized support arrangements developed by the Teaching Council in collaboration with the Headmaster. These arrangements are formalized in an individual Personalized Learning Plan (PDP) and may include adapted timetables, additional support sessions, assistive technologies, or supplementary learning activities. These adjustments do not alter the full-time nature of the program.

For complete information on attendance requirements, absence procedures, and available student support, please refer to the Student Handbook, available from the Administration Office or on the LMS.

Age range of MondoScuola Malta students

The programs offered by Mondo Scuola Malta are intended for students aged 14–19, in accordance with the standard enrollment profile for Italian upper secondary education (scuola secondaria di secondo grado).

Under specific circumstances, with the approval of the Headmaster and in accordance with the admissions procedures described in the Student Handbook, applications for students outside this age range may be considered. Adult learners wishing to complete or continue an Italian upper secondary education qualification are also encouraged to contact the Administrative Office directly.

Evaluation Criteria and Transparency

The assessment criteria and marking rubrics for each assignment are published in advance on the LMS and included in each course description. Students can review how their work will be assessed against specific learning outcomes before submitting any assignments.

Revaluation Opportunity

Students who do not achieve the minimum score for a given assessment are entitled to one or more reassessment opportunities, which may include retaking written exams, retaking practical tests, or completing supervised remedial activities. Reassessment deadlines, formats, and procedures are published in the course manual and on the LMS.

Appeal Procedure Against the Evaluation

Students wishing to challenge an evaluation decision may submit a written appeal to the Program Coordinator, stating the reasons and attaching any supporting evidence. The appeal is reviewed by the Coordinator along with two external academics. A written response, including the decision and any corrective actions, is provided within 15 calendar days. In the event of disagreement, a further appeal may be submitted to the Management Board, whose decision is final and communicated within 15 calendar days.

Mitigating Circumstances

Students experiencing unexpected personal circumstances—such as illness, bereavement, or serious technical issues—may submit a formal request for mitigation to the Program Coordinator, along with relevant documentation. Possible measures include: extending deadlines, alternative assessment formats, or postponing the exam. All requests are carefully evaluated individually.

Rating System

The evaluation system applied at Mondo Scuola Malta follows the Italian national evaluation scale established by the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM).

The minimum passing grade is 6/10. Students who achieve a grade lower than 6/10 in any subject are entitled to re-evaluation opportunities as described in the Assessment Procedures section.

For the fifth-year State Exam, the grading scale is 60–100 (with the addition of a '100 cum laude' grade), in accordance with MIM national regulations. Details on the State Exam grading criteria are published on the LMS and provided to students at the beginning of the fifth year.

Workload in credits

Mondo Scuola Malta's programs are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) and correspond to EQF/MQF Level 4. As upper secondary education programs, the Italian system evaluates them in terms of instructional hours, curricular content, and national learning outcomes—and not through ECTS credits, which are applicable to higher education programs.

In accordance with MFHEA requirements, and for comparability within the Maltese Qualifications Framework (MQF) and European Qualifications Framework (EQF), an indicative workload mapping is provided below. Figures are calculated based on total learning hours, using the standard ECTS conversion (1 ECTS credit ≈ 25–30 hours of total student workload).
